Spam & Virus Partnership Still Going Strong
Published June 18th, 2007 in Other Internet Stuff, TechnologyTags: email, spam, spam on email.
E-mail still the favorite food for all kinds of virus. And if I am not wrong, every 3rd email out of 4 is a spam. The spamming rate has reached a scorching height of 76.1% in April this year.
According to the MessageLabs, phishing tactics were used in one out of every 416.1 e-mails. The proliferation of spam partly explains why the volume of e-mail traffic has nearly doubled in the past two years, according to DYS Analytics data cited in a May 24, 2007, Washington Post article.
Postini figures that spam and viruses now comprise over 93% of e-mails, up 135% from September 2006, and 36% higher than in January 2007. Web-borne security threats from spyware and adware are also on the rise — the spread of online threats increased by 34.4% over the previous month. While spam filters have done much to reduce security threats via e-mail, the problem will continue as long as there is a response from recipients. This is much like drug dealers who will be in business as long as demand continues. And when spam filters improve (like border patrols can get better), cyber criminals will start looking for other network vulnerabilities.
