You must have seen an error on your PC popping up with a message – Low Virtual Memory.

It’s been couple of time for me. So, I finally decided to digg in as to what could be the issue and how should I fix it. After fixing mine, so here I am with a solution.

How to increase Virtual Memory (Defn)?

I am putting an example for Windows XP –

  • Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  • Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
  • On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
  • On the Advanced tab, under Virtual memory, click Change.
  • Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
  • Under Paging file size for selected drive, click to Custom size check box. You can enter the amount of memory you would like to reserve for Virtual memory by entering the initial and maximum size.
  • Click Set
  • When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Note: You should choose the same amount for the initial size and maximum size. This will Stop your CPU from constantly changing the paging file.

Don’t forget to choose the drive for which you want to increase the virtual memory. For most of the cases it’s your C: Drive. You can set the initial size and maximum size after clicking the Custom size check box. Remember its better to keep the Virtual memory values the same.
